Three days into a trip is where the fridge starts to matter. The dual battery is down, there's no powered site for another two hundred kilometres, and the choice becomes idling the engine or eating warm food.

This is the alternative. A 300W solar blanket that folds to roughly a sixth of its open size, weighs 10 kg, and drops onto a bonnet, a roof or the ground beside camp. A-grade monocrystalline cells running at 23.5% conversion efficiency behind PET films that pass 95% of the light — so it puts real amps back into the battery, not the trickle a cheap panel manages.

The controller is the part that earns its place. Atem Power fit an MPPT unit rather than PWM, which means it tracks the panel's peak power point and converts surplus voltage into usable current, pulling around 20% more energy out of the same sunlight. It's lithium-compatible, so it charges LiFePO4 as happily as it does AGM, gel, calcium or plain lead acid. When a cloud passes or someone parks a bakkie in your sun, the auto-optimisation function re-establishes the connection the moment the light returns — you don't come back to find it sulking at zero.

Everything terminates in Anderson plugs, so it connects to your setup in seconds and can't be plugged in backwards. The poly-cotton canvas backing is waterproof and there are six stitched loops around the edge for pegging or tying it down when the wind gets up.
